About our host

A brief introduction to our conference

Following the success of the CANSO Africa Conference 2022, we now look forward to continuing the conversations in Livingstone, Zambia.

Our full programme is still being finalised but will include insightful debates, discussions and conversations you expect from a CANSO Africa. As expected, we are reaching out to our key stakeholders to enhance the conversation and ensure relevance within the regional and Global aviation agenda.

Our discussions will include the broader topics on SAATM and the role that the ANSP should play. Furthermore, we will unpack the CATS Global Vision 2045 through the eyes of an ANSP CEO and look at how the Africa region should align to this futuristic process. We are lining up topics on fostering culture of service through responsive service provision, a panel discussion on talent management and employee mobility, relaunching the Peer Review Mechanism and, finally, operational concepts on collaborative safety and decision making.

On Thursday afternoon and Friday morning we will also host two post conference workshops on Cybersecurity and Safety Culture

And, of course, alongside all of that will be numerous opportunities for networking at our opening Welcome Reception on 5 September, Conference Dinner on 6 September, at our exhibition which will run for the duration of the conference, and during the exciting host event planned for Friday afternoon.

12:00-13:00Making the CATS Global Vision for Future skies reality – A CEO Perspective

In a unique collaboration, global leaders from more than 25 aviation and aerospace organisations have come together to create a vision for the skies of 2045 and beyond.

The Complete Air Traffic System (CATS) Global Council, a forum of industry bodies, believes that a shared blueprint and joint action are vital to make sure that future skies are efficient, clean and safe and that they work for travelers, operators, nations and the environment.

“To be ready for these future skyscapes that are just on the horizon, we need new ways of thinking and more cooperation amongst all players in this industry, including with governments. With more focus on harmonisation and integration, technology and sustainability, our vision of what is possible can become a reality – the blue skies above us can be green, effective and safe.” Simon Hocquard, Director General, CANSO.

14:45-15:30The Employee of the future. Balancing Talent Management, operational needs and mobility

The challenge of skills shortage is a global problem. However, in Africa, the issues are somewhat different. The region has largely operated with structures that were informed by historical employer/employee relationships. As the younger generation enters the working environment and the world opening up and becoming even more global, our policies on employment, training and retention are found wanting. The need to revise, and in most cases completely overhaul these policies is critical. Issues of flexible employment, soft skills, mobility of employees, harmonisation of qualification and training in general are now top of mind for both employers and employees.

16:00-16:30Peer Review Mechanism – Phase II, Pilot Launch

In the last few months CANSO has worked closely with the ICAO Regional offices to revamp the Peer review Mechanism. This initiative, designed to foster improvements through peer-to-peer visits and structured reviews was limited to the Safety Management System of the ANSP operations. The revised documentation will now cover the full ANS environment thus offering a valuable tool for the ANSPs seeking improvements in their operations.

It is therefore timely that a pilot process is introduced such that a few ANSPs can start with reviews while ensuring that all improvements that have been effected are practical and value adding.

The session will explore the status of unmanned aircraft system management in the region with a focus on operational environment. This will include more details on current operations, lessons learnt, and examples of roadmap followed by those who are ahead of the curve. Furthermore, the technology landscape, including lessons from other regions, will be shared. The discussions will attempt to find guiding conclusions for the Africa region and specifically for those who are in the early stage of planning or implementation.

10:00 – 10:45Finding Operational Efficiencies through ATFM/A-CDM

More and more States in the region are implementing A-CDM as part of the Mombasa ATFM roadmap. The initiative is gaining momentum and at the same time creating a good base on lessons learnt for future implementation. Given our environment and sometimes the institutional arrangements in the region, a multi-stakeholder approach is not only desired, but it is critical for success. In an industry where efficiencies are critical for airspace users and for operations in general, the role of a well-defined Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) should be supported at the highest level. This session will assist members as they embark on the implementation journey and will highlight key lessons, structured approaches, and pinpoint available support. The session will hear from Airlines, ANSP and Airport operators.

11:15-12:00Collaborative Safety Environment, strengthening our safety pillars

Safety is key for all stakeholders in the aviation industry. Collaboration has demonstrated that progress can often be achieved more effectively when stakeholders work together with a shared focus. This approach will strengthen the safety pillars and reduce areas of weakness in the planning and execution. This session is designed to engage the industry on their plans and approaches to collaborative safety, including looking at key initiatives that the regional CANSO members can implement.
